For the second half of the year between June and December the town of Hermanus sees its population swell both on land and in the ocean. Visiting southern right and Bryde’s whales compete for your attention with the great white sharks a little further off the coast of Gansbaai. With the possibility of watching whales swim and play so close that you can see them from the clifftops and beaches, Hermanus is one of the best places on the planet to get up close to these ocean giants.
Just 25 minutes from Hermanus on the edge of the Botrivier Lagoon is the impressive golf and spa resort of the Arabella Hotel. Beyond the 5-star accommodation and top-ranked golf course, the wonder of Arabella lies in its location in the Kogelberg Biosphere. This UNESCO designated floral kingdom is one of the world’s most biodiverse and a wonder of the natural world.
A visit to the Overberg would not be complete without a day-trip to Agulhas National Park. The southernmost tip of Africa, famous as the Cape of Storms, and meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic oceans is watched over by the Cape Agulhas lighthouse, and a highlight of a holiday in the Overberg.
