Best known as the gateway to the Kruger National Park and the perfect stopover point between Johannesburg and Mozambique or Swaziland, the city now officially known as Mbombela, has much more to offer. Beyond the chance to see the Big 5, you can crawl through the world’s oldest crystal lined caves, watch a show at Emnotweni Casino, take shade under an ancient cycad, or pay a visit to a nearby charming mining town.

Towards the west of Nelspruit, a half hour drive out of the city is one of the Lowveld’s most popular tourist destinations, the Sudwala Caves. Regarded as the oldest caves in the world, a tour of the 240 million year old caves will take you past amazing formations like Samson’s Pillar and the Screaming Monster, give you glimpses of its prehistoric history, and tell tales of bloody battles when it was used as a fortress.
Close to Mbombela (Nelspruit) is the charming historic mining town of Kaapsehoop. The town fell into decline after the hoped-for gold rush in the late 1800’s couldn’t compare with more profitable mining towns that sprung up. In recent years however, the town’s period houses, resident wild horses, and quiet streets have been a welcoming destination for daytrips during a Mbombela holiday.
The world-famous Kruger National Park needs little in the way of introduction. Not only is this one of the largest game reserves on the continent, but its variety and density of wildlife makes it one of the best places anywhere to see the Big 5. An hour’s drive from Mbombela will take you to one of the parks closest entrance gates and considering the massive size of the park (19,000km2) it’s best to get an early start. For safari first-timers or if you want to benefit from the experienced eyes of a bush guide then booking a guided day safari is recommended. You can also choose to stay at a choice of beautiful resort accommodation closer to the park. The Sabi River Sun Resort mixes wild vistas with 18-holes of top-quality golf, and Hazyview Sun is a relaxed destination surrounded by a 10-acre garden estate.
Another great day-trip idea to include in your Mbombela holiday is a drive to the stunning natural wonder of the Blyde River Canyon. More than just being one of the world’s largest canyons, the spectacle of the canyon lies in its lush subtropical greenery, its resident primates and wildlife, and its unique formations and lookout points like God’s Window and the Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
