Walking Tour

Maputo’s colour and culture is certainly not-shy, but the real character lies a little below the surface. A walking tour in Maputo is definitely one of the best ways to see the city and explore more than just what meets the eye. Walking tours can be arranged with some of the city’s most experienced guides and can be customised to suit you. Tours take you to some of the must-see-Maputo highlights including the Iron House by Gustave Eiffel, the famous train station and the Old Fort. Discover even more as you visit the markets, try and buy beautiful capulanas, meet the locals, sample the food and explore the art-deco buildings and unique masterpieces by Pancho Guedes.

Good to know: Maputo walking tours can be arranged to suit your schedule and your preferences, but sensible shoes, common-sense and curious eyes will make the experience much more enjoyable.

Inhaca Island

40km off the coast of Maputo, this 52km2 island separates the Maputo Bay from the Indian Ocean and is worth the two-and-a-half-hour ferry crossing. The island is inhabited, has some small villages, a handful of restaurants and a few bars. The real reason you visit though is for beaches that are often empty and the wildlife diversity. 160 coral species, ocean residents like butterflyfish and barracuda, parrotfish and pufferfish, as well as visiting whale sharks and manta rays in summer, two species of turtle that nest on the eastern shores and about 300 bird species make it a popular destination for ecotourists and nature lovers.

Good to know: the Island is part of a protected area and so there is a small fee to pay to visit. There are two ferry options, but it is good to talk to the guest relations team first to check schedules. You may need to take a small boat to the island itself if the ferry is unable to dock, but there will be some boats ready to help you get to shore.

Macaneta

The beautiful Macaneta peninsula is just 35km north of Maputo and offers a picture-perfect Mozambique beach experience. The thin sliver of peninsula is bordered by azure ocean and white sand beaches and is a fairly easy drive from the city (depending on traffic it can take approx. 1 hour to get to the start of the peninsula). This popular city-escape destination has opportunities for everything from whale watching to turtle spotting.

Aside from beach sunbathing and snorkeling, fishing charters are a popular excursion from Macaneta with excellent deep-sea opportunities for all skill levels.

Good To Know: much of the peninsula is accessible by normal car, but some areas are only accessible by 4X4. Check the weather before you leave as the peninsula is totally exposed to the ocean.

Xefina Island

Not just one, but three islands. The most popular, and with the most to see for beach and island exploring, is Ilha Xefina Grande, just 4km from the Costa do Sol beachfront in Maputo.

Getting there is best to go with a tour operator (talk to guest relations and they’ll help you make arrangements). Depending on the tour operator and what they offer, it’s good to come well prepared with beach and swim wear as well as drinks and food. Beyond the beaches, there is an abandoned Portuguese fort that can be explored.

Good to know: Even though the Xefina islands are just off the Maputo beachfront, they remain relatively quiet and untouched, making them an easy to get to alternative to exploring further north.
